The NYC MTA Station Agent Exam is the entry-level civil service test used by New York City Transit to hire Station Agents — the uniformed employees who staff subway station booths, sell MetroCards and OMNY products, provide information to riders, and monitor station safety. Passing the exam earns you a place on an eligible list; hiring happens off that list in list-number order.
Who can take the exam
Filing is open only when the MTA releases an official Notice of Examination (NOE). Candidates must be at least 18 by appointment, have a high school diploma or GED (or equivalent work experience specified in the NOE), and be able to satisfy a medical, drug, and background review before hire.
How the exam is scored
The written multiple-choice test is scored on a scaled 70–100. Only candidates who reach the passing score are placed on the eligible list; higher scores usually mean earlier list numbers and earlier hire dates. The list itself typically remains active for four years.

How to prepare in the right order
- Read the current NOE end-to-end and note the exact tested abilities.
- Take one full-length diagnostic to see which sections you're weakest in.
- Drill the weakest section first — usually map reading or written directions.
- Practice customer service and situational judgment last; these move slowest.
- Two weeks out, switch to timed full-length practice only.
