How to Answer Customer Service Questions on the Station Agent Exam

Customer service questions on the Station Agent Exam are pattern-based. Learn the four principles that pick the right answer almost every time.

Customer service items are the section candidates most often get wrong — not because the answers are hard, but because two answers usually feel reasonable. The test is looking for a specific hierarchy of values; learn it and the right answer becomes obvious.

The four principles, in order

  1. Safety first — anything that reduces risk to a rider or employee outranks everything else.
  2. Follow the rule — if a written procedure exists, use it.
  3. Treat the rider with respect — even when they're wrong or hostile.
  4. Solve the problem in front of you — don't defer unless the rule requires it.

Applying the hierarchy

When two answers look plausible, pick the one that ranks higher on this list. An answer that solves the rider's problem but skips a required log entry loses to the answer that does both, even if the second answer feels slower.

Traps to avoid

  • Answers that argue with the rider — the exam never rewards conflict.
  • Answers that promise more than a Station Agent is authorized to do.
  • Answers that defer a decision the Agent is supposed to handle themselves.
